As Told By

YF Muse @dawn.tan talks inspiration, her self-care practice, and favorite fall scents.

How do you practice self-care?

Understanding the true meaning behind ‘self-care’ to me has really helped me practice it deeper and more intentionally.

I love practicing it by listening to what my mind, body, and/or soul needs at the time. Sometimes, it’s fueling and inspiring myself by listening to self development podcasts, sometimes it’s moving my body through pilates or allowing my mind and body to fully immersed in rest. Other times it’s reinvigorating my soul through hobbies that I want to keep exploring — unplugging from the internet, exploring a new place, making floral arrangements, decorating our home, going thrifting, and creating art that’s not directly tied to work.

What is your favorite piece of jewelry and why?

My engagement ring. It’s my favorite piece because it symbolizes love, commitment, and eternity between me and my husband. I love that the exact meaning can be applied not only to your partner but it can apply to yourself and to everyone that’s important to you.

What are your top 3 must-dos in Denver?

1. A visit to my favorite spots here — I have a few favorite spots saved in my Denver guide.

2. Going antiquing — there are so many antique malls, vintage resale shops, and great thrift stores here at very reasonable prices. I’ve found most of my unique home goods this way!

3. Going for a nature hike — this is an obvious must, there are so many hiking trails nearby with scenic views!

Who inspires you?

I am inspired by the younger version of me. I say this because at such a young age, I had big dreams. I dreamt of becoming a fashion designer and had so much belief that I would become one and had so much conviction saying it out loud when people asked what I wanted to become when I grew up.

As I grew older, ‘reality’ set in and odds stacked against me — coming here as an immigrant without a nest egg, I worked two jobs to pay for college. Taking fashion classes where sewing and sketching as your homework felt like a third job at the time, it all felt out of reach. I took on jobs that paid the bills but wasn’t fulfilling. Thankfully, I’m now able to let go of those jobs and do something a step closer to my dreams. I hope I continue to be in tune with my inner child, have conviction, dream bigger, pursue my passions, and find my true purpose.

Oysters or mussels?

Oysters all the way.

What is your favorite fall scent?

My go-to’s are Gaiac 10 by Le Labo and Autumn Vibes by Maison Margiela Fragrances. I also recently discovered Somebody Wood by Phlur, which are all perfect for fall!

Who are some of your favorite vintage furniture designers?

Charlotte Perriand!

Where is a place you think everyone should visit?

I think everyone should visit a third world or undeveloped country. I say this because I think seeing the world through a different lens help shift your perspective especially if you come from a more developed country. I grew up in the Philippines, a developing country — I’ve seen people go through life without having much yet somehow still find things to be grateful and joyful about.

What would you say to your younger self?

Don’t worry, everything will work out — it might take you longer but you will achieve your dreams, you will break out of your shell and be more confident with yourself. You’re going to go through mundane and taxing jobs, heartbreaks, financial instability but you will find your way out and all of this will set you up to a better version of you. Your future self is currently living your dream life and making you so proud. Thank you for dreaming big!
